Fermented Foods and The Gut Brain Connection

PROBIOTICS AND FERMENTED FOODS AFFECT THE BRAIN

There’s been a lot of talk recently about fermented foods and what’s being called the gut brain connection or the gut brain biome. Research shows that there is an undeniable connection between what’s going on in your gastrointestinal tract and what’s going on in your mind.

What some doctor’s are beginning to discover is that probiotics and fermented foods are impacting intestinal health, in a good way.

HOW GUT BACTERIA IMPACTS YOUR HEALTH

Through a variety of interconnected systems, the presence of gut microbes directly stimulates the nervous system. This can not only affect your sleep, mood and memory, but can also be clinically and therapeutically relevant to many disorders. Imbalances like chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome and fibromyalgia, can be impacted by the bacteria in your gut.

PROBIOTICS AND FERMENTED FOODS ARE GOOD FOR THE GUT

Many studies reveal the undeniable benefit of probiotics and how a variety of fermented foods help increase dietary fiber and good gut bacteria. Fermented foods contain helpful lactobacillus and other essential B Vitamins. Though there aren’t many clinical studies to back this up, many people have seen improvements in digestive health by incorporating fermented foods and probiotics into their daily diet.

The fact is, digestive disorders are on the rise, causing not only discomfort but in some cases even death.

DIGESTIVE DISORDER CONTRIBUTING FACTORS

Some of the contributing factors include constipation, which is one of the most common gastrointestinal health problems in the United States. Many people suffer from constipation, as a direct result of lifestyle changes, stress and dietary changes. Aging and consuming over the counter dietary supplements and prescription medications. also play a significant role.

Obesity is yet another factor impacting gastrointestinal health. Due to a culture of overeating, consuming a diet of high fat, low-nutrient or “empty calorie” foods don’t help either.

OBESITY IS ALSO ON THE RISE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN

According to recent studies, more than 50% of adults, both men and women are considered obese. Sadly, the rate of obesity among children is also on the rise. Since the 1980’s, obesity rates among teenagers has quadrupled. The economic impact of childhood obesity is estimated to cost Americans a whopping $14 billion, (yes with a B) in annual direct health related costs.

In addition to these factors, enduring both internal and external stress factors can disrupt intestinal and mental relaxation. Whether you know it or not, your gut talks to your brain.

ONGOING RESEARCH ON THE GUT BRAIN BIOME

Alas, there is hope. Many doctors are beginning to research and better understand this connection. Finally, many doctors are studying outcomes related to diet, genetics and lifestyle. Many recommend plant based eating that includes fermented foods for patients.

Time will tell, but hopefully, one good outcome will be more people will be healthy in body, GUT and mind.
